Pterocarya rhoifolia, Sieb. & Zucc. (P. sorbifolia, Sieb. & Zucc. P. laevigata, Hort.). Tree, attaining 80 ft., with spreading branches: branchlets glabrous: lvs. 8—15 in. long, with terete pubescent or almost glabrous rachis; lfts. 11-21, oblong or oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, pubescent on the veins beneath or almost glabrous, 2-4 in. long: fr. with a broad rhombic wing, about 1 in. across. Japan. S.Z. 2:150. S.I.F. 1:16.—This species is an important forest tree in Japan and has proved hardy at the Arnold Arboretum. Alfred Rehder.
