Senecio elegans, Linn. (S. purpureus, Hort. Jacobaea elegans, Moench). Purple Ragwort. Annual, viscid-pubescent, erect or diffuse, 1-2 ft. high: lvs. various, mostly oblong in outline, pinnate, lobed or toothed, the sinuses chiefly broad and rounded, clasping at the base: heads in loose corymbs, the rays purple; disk-fls. yellow. S. Afr. B.M. 238. Var. erectus, Harv. St. slender but erect: lvs. pinnate or 2-pinnatifid.—S. elegans is an old garden plant. A common form of it has double fls. Var. albus, Hort., has white fls. CH
