Thespesia populnea, Soland. A small tree with the younger portions covered with peltate scales: lvs. long-petioled, ovate, cordate, acuminate, 3 in. across: fls. axillary, 2-3 in. across, yellow. Trop. Asia, Afr., and the islands of the Pacific.—Cult. in S. Calif., where it is said to succeed only in warm and moist locations. The fls. are described as varying from yellow to purple. A common tree on tropical seacoasts, reaching 30-40 or even 50 ft., with dense top, blooming all the year; the inner bark yields a fiber, and the wood is durable and useful. CH
