Typhonium (an old name of some plant of the family, named for Typhon, a mythological giant). Araceae. Perennial tuberous herbs, occasionally grown in the greenhouse. Lvs. appearing with the fls., sagittate or hastate, 3-5-lobed or -parted or pedately cut; petiole elongated: peduncle usually short: spathes persistent, throat constricted, blade ovate or lanceolate; spadix sessile or stipitate, included; male infl. cylindrical, female short : fls. in an appendiculate monoecious spadix, male and female elements remote; perianth none; stamens in the male fl. 1-3; ovary in female fl. ovoid or oblong-ovoid, 1-celled: berry ovoid, 1-2-seeded. — About 20 species, Trop. Asia, Austral., and islands of the Pacific. CH
